ANALYSIS/OPINION:
it is being reported that there are more U.S. soldiers garrisoning Washington than there are in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. This would strongly suggest that all these troops have been deployed not for the purposes of national defense, but for political stage management.
No matter how much someone may despise Donald Trump, they cannot credibly say that the U.S. government is more threatened by its own citizens than the jihadists that the U.S. (and its allies in NATO) have expended 20 years, hundreds of billions of dollars and ten thousand lives fighting. This ridiculous, alarmist overreaction with huge armored phalanxes has been precisely designed to make people think there is more danger than there actually is and to keep a sense of panic, hysteria and crisis on the boil. It is deliberately opposed to the creation of calm, and it inhibits the more rational assessment of last week’s events and the wider controversies.
This is confirmed by the photos of whole companies of National Guardsmen sleeping on the floor in Capitol Hill. You can’t seriously expect us to believe that a thousand soldiers didn’t pack a single camp bed or foam mat between them? Again, this is pure theater — creating an impression of desperation and disorder where none exists, imagining scenes of valiant heroes collapsing where they stand from the exhaustion of spirited defense when the actual explanation is either incompetent leadership or cynical calculation. I wonder how the Guardsmen feel about their discomfort being an asset to Nancy Pelosi’s political point scoring.
