The revival will be available to stream the day that CBS All Access rebrands as Paramount+.
The Real World is coming back to ViacomCBS.
After its most recent season streamed on Facebook Watch, ViacomCBS is nearing a deal to revisit the series on Paramount+ with the original New York cast from the first season of the reality juggernaut.
Titled The Real World Homecoming: New York, the new series will launch March 4 — the same date that Paramount+ is being rebranded from its current form as CBS All Access. The series will reunite the original cast in the iconic loft featured in the first season. MTV's Real World social channel has been dropping several hints that the series would be returning soon. MTV was the original home for the first 32 seasons of the franchise. Filming of Homecoming was recently completed.
"MTV's The Real World has been credited with creating the reality TV genre and was one of the first series that tackled important and yet unrepresented topics of the time, from HIV/AIDS, race, gender, orientation and religion,” said Chris McCarthy, president of MTV Entertainment Group. "With Paramount+ being the home to so many global reality hit franchises, it seems only fitting to bring back the franchise and cast that started it all."
Original New York cast members Becky Blasband, Andre Comeau, Heather B. Gardner, Julie Gentry, Norman Korpi, Eric Nies and Kevin Powell will all return to the house for Homecoming as the series explores how Real World transformed their lives. Sitarah Pendelton-Eaglin, Candida Boyette-Clemons and Nadim Amiry exec produce the series for MTV Entertainment Studios. Jonathan Murray, Julie Pizzi, Erica Ross, Kevin Lee and Trish Gold exec produce for franchise creators Bunim/Murray Productions. Jacob Lane is co-executive producer and George Verschoor is consulting producer.
The revival of the series comes as MTV celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. MTV is one of multiple ViacomCBS brands that will be reflected on Paramount+ as the conglomerate looks to broaden out its streamer to better incorporate its brands beyond CBS including Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and Paramount properties. The move is designed to see the streamer better compete with the likes of Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and more recent arrivals from Apple, Disney, WarnerMedia and NBCUniversal.
Paramount+ was heavily promoted during Sunday's Super Bowl on CBS with ads highlighting the well-known brands — like Star Trek, Survivor, Dora and SpongeBob — that will be available on the streamer. The platform will also be home to franchises including Love & Hip Hop, Love Island, RuPaul's Drag Race, The Amazing Race, The Challenge, Big Brother, Jersey Shore and more.
Paramount+ is scheduled for an investor day Feb. 24 where more plans for the service, including content, will be unveiled.
Homecoming represents the kind of must-have programming that streamers look for in a bid to bring in new subscribers for launch. Paramount+ is also readying a Yellowstone prequel series from Taylor Sheridan.
The Real World last aired in 2017 on MTV. As part of ViacomCBS' efforts to mine its intellectual property, The Real World was revived and sold to Facebook Watch as MTV launched its in-house studio in a bid to monetize content that either was too expensive or didn't fit in with its linear networks. With a streamer to program, the franchise is now returning in-house.
