The original script for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker featured two big connections to The Mandalorian series on Disney+. Originally titled Duel of the Fates, the full script from Lucasfilm's original director Colin Trevorrow was leaked (and verified) online in 2020, revealing a very different film than the one that came to theaters from director J.J. Abrams. A such, Duel of the Fates would have carried some very intriguing references and connective tissue to The Mandalorian, which had its first season episodes airing in the same month of the film's release in 2019.
One of the biggest changes for the film would have been the trajectory and concluding arc for Kylo Ren. While Rey had hope that Ben Solo could be redeemed in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Ben Solo would have doubled down as Kylo Ren and embraced the dark side even further in Duel of the Fates, rather than his eventual redemption before his death in The Rise of Skywalker. Likewise, while Kylo Ren would have still been leading the First Order as the Supreme Leader and ventured to Mustafar, the original script reveals that he would have found a Sith Holocron instead of a Wayfinder, containing a message meant for Darth Vader from the still deceased Emperor Palpatine. However, due to Kylo Ren not being his grandfather (as much as he'd like to be), the Holocron would have exploded in his face, causing damage and immense pain.
As a result, Kylo Ren would have been rushed to the First Order's medical facilities, and large portions of his face would have been reconstructed using Beskar steel. Beskar is the classic and traditional metal used in the creation of Mandalorian armor and weapons, and it carries a large focus in The Mandalorian series. Likewise, Kylo Ren creates a brand new mask in the original script due to breaking his first one in The Last Jedi, and the helmet would have been made from Mandalorian Beskar as well.
Additionally, Kylo's band of dark warriors known as the Knights of Ren would have made their debut in Duel of the Fates, just as they did in Rise of Skywalker. However, one of the Knights would have been wielding the ancient and coveted Darksaber, which would have been a pretty big deal. The Darksaber is a symbolic weapon in Mandalorian culture, as the one who claims it in combat gains the right to rule Mandalore and all of its warrior clans. However, the Darksaber has changed hands several times since its original owner, and The Mandalorian's finale episode of its second season saw Din Djarin win the Darksaber from the Empire's Moff Gideon, who had taken it during the Empire's purge of Mandalore.
Duel of the Fates and its ties to The Mandalorian would have certainly been very exciting. Kylo Ren's use of Beskar would have spoken to a new identity and strength he would have found to seek his own power in the dark side of the Force, rather than continuing to try and be just like his grandfather Darth Vader. Furthermore, had one of the Knights of Ren been wielding the Darksaber, it would have absolutely made their appearances in the film much more intriguing and engaging for longtime fans familiar with the iconic weapon and its history. Sadly, it wasn't meant to be, but at least Star Wars fans can still read the leaked script online and envision what might have been.
