WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Cable #9 by Gerry Duggan, Phil Noto, & VC's Joe Sabino, on sale now
Recent events have shaken the young Cable who has been living on Krakoa to his core, undercutting the extreme confidence the young hero has in himself. However, his next plan to bring down the original Cable's most personal enemy might prove himself once and for all.
In Cable #9, Cable and Hope Summers need to find a time-displaced older version of the original Cable, which could allow the Alpha-Level mutant to remain in the present-day even after potentially helping his younger self defeat Stryfe, or perhaps even taking the place of his younger self.

One of the main throughlines of the currently-running Cable series has been the occasional flashes to a different, older incarnation of Cable making his way through a hellish futuristic landscape. Initially, it wasn't clear if this was a future version of the present Cable or a flashback to the original version of the character, who was killed by the young Cable when he arrived in the present-day. The series has primarily focused instead on the younger Cable as he tries to live up to the legend of his alternate self. But the events of X of Swords and King in Black resulted in meaningful, public losses for the young telepathic powerhouse.
However, the threat of Stryfe's return has made Cable desperate. Now, the young telepath is trying to uncover any way to find out more about Cable's dark clone and why he's been kidnapping mutant infants. Ultimately, he's forced to turn to someone he's been avoiding: Hope Summers, the young woman who the original Cable raised as a daughter. With no other options, Cable tells her that they need the original Cable to bring down Stryfe. But since Krakoa has firm laws in place about having multiples of the same person resurrected, the two will instead have to search through the timestream for a version of Cable who can help them deal with Stryfe.
This could actually quietly be the key to bringing the core Cable back to the current Marvel continuity, while not necessarily writing off the fresher incarnation of the character. In fact, this could even be a way for the pair to potentially co-exist, albeit with the risk that only one of them could even be revived through the resurrection protocols. While Krakoa won't allow two copies of the same person to be resurrected, a time-traveling older version of Cable could decide to spend some time in the present-day before returning to his proper place in the timestream. While this would give the hero a time limit on how long he could live in the present before returning to his ultimate fate, it could give the X-Men (at least briefly) a very powerful ally against forces like Stryfe -- and allow his loved ones to finally gain closure from his death.
Assuming he doesn't outright replace his younger self, the older Cable could even become the ultimate mentor for the present-day Cable, helping instruct him further in the use of his powers and showing him how to become a more impressive fighter. The battle against Stryfe might be the key to finding a way to restore his greatest enemy and give the X-Men another psychic powerhouse nd veteran tactical leader in their roster of allies. However, there's always the chance that this plan could backfire and actually lead to the dark timeline the older Cable has been exploring, setting up the potential for even more time-travel shenanigans.
