Warning! This article contains spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #143 A number of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans were introduced to it through the classic ‘90s Saturday Morning Cartoon, where they didn’t just meet the heroic Turtles themselves, but also the wacky characters they’d encounter with every adventure. Among them were fun, toyetic mutants like Bebop, Rocksteady, and Leatherhead, but there were also more obscure mutants who the Turtles had to face-off with - mutants like Groundchuck and Dirtbag. Now, Groundchuck and Dirtbag have been adapted into the current continuity of TMNT comics, and these once beloved animated characters have become pure nightmare fuel.
The official TMNT canon under IDW Publishing has done an amazing job at bringing classic characters into the newly established continuity in increasingly interesting ways. While characters like the aforementioned Bebop and Rocksteady have essentially the same origin they did in the original cartoon, other characters like Armaggon have seen drastic changes - most of which are absolutely incredible.
Given that the TMNT comics are and have always been a bit more mature than the movies and shows, it only makes sense that the characters who’ve been included from the classic cartoon would be amped-up a bit in that direction. For instance, Armaggon was originally a fun mutant shark from the future. Now, he’s practically the embodiment of multiversal chaos, biting through timelines and threatening all reality. Therefore, it’s no surprise that characters like Groundchuck and Dirtbag - who originated as fun mutant bad guys working for Shredder - are now absolutely horrifying.
TMNT’s Groundchuck & Dirtbag Became An Amalgamated Mutant Horrorshow
In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #143 by Sofie Campbell, Kevin Eastman, and Gavin Smith, the Ninja Turtles have finally learned who’s been kidnaping mutants across Mutant Town: Dr. Barlow. Barlow was once a human surgeon who has since become a mad-mutant scientist hellbent on returning himself to his human form. In the process, Barlow has conducted some horrific experiments with his unwilling mutant captives, including Groundchuck and Dirtbag.
The classic mutanimal bull and mole have been reduced to an amalgamated two-headed creature puppeted by their evil creator. Fueled by the dark magic of a Dragon Scale (left over from the demonic invasion shown in TMNT#100), Groundchuck and Dirtbag became one horrifying creature who did more than scare the Ninja Turtles. Their combined mutant strength made them a legitimate threat, and in the end, that threat had to be neutralized. Leonardo killed Groundchuck and Dirtbag in this issue, bringing a tragic end to their cursed life.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has always represented the type of mutants made famous in the ‘90s that grownups hated and kids loved. The mutants in the show and comics were weird, gross, and slimy - with the heroic Turtles themselves literally living in the sewers. The series wasn’t glamorous or attractive, it was ugly and gritty, with elements that totally broke the mold from the more polished kids shows and comics. That’s why so many people immediately loved TMNT, and why it’s still going strong to this day. That’s also why this reimagining of Groundchuck and Dirtbag is so perfect. This character is horrible to look at, with elements that are even scary, but they’re also awesome in a totally sick kind of way. They’re mutants, they’re unnatural by nature, so to see them brought to the extreme like this is so much fun, especially for fans who first saw them in the classic TMNT cartoon.
While Groundchuck and Dirtbag’s time in the current TMNT canon was short-lived, and ultimately tragic, what they brought to the series was unparalleled. They represented the very thing that made TMNT great from the start: cool, gross mutants. So, while Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles did unquestionably turn two beloved animated characters into pure nightmare fuel, it also reminded fans why they fell in love with the series to begin with.
