A wolfdog in Tennessee has melted hearts after the moment his friend came to visit was caught on camera.
Hallu, an 18-month-old wolfdog, was thrilled when he realized that his best friend, a black Labrador called Russ, had arrived for a playdate.
In the heartwarming footage shared on TikTok, Hallu trots over to the car, when he realizes Russ had arrived he has a seriously cute reaction.
With ears back and tail wagging, he greets his friend with a serious sense of joy. Alongside the video the owner wrote: "Dog friendships are just so pure."
Hallu's owner, Abigail Hyndman told Newsweek that this reaction was not unusual: "Wolfdogs like Hallu bond very closely with their friends, and Russ has been in Hallu's life since he was just a puppy," she said. "He greets his friends this enthusiastically, whether they've been apart for 5 minutes or 5 months.
"In this case he hadn't seen Russ in a few months, but they usually see each other at least once a month," she added.
Wolfdogs are a cross between a domesticated dog and a wolf and are legal to own in Tennessee. But while dogs and wild wolves share more than 99 percent of their DNA, they are not recommended as pets in the same way as a standard domestic dog.
They saw a particular rise in popularity following the airing of HBO series Game of Thrones which featured direwolves, sparking an interest in wolf-like companion animals. But wolfdogs require specialized care, including careful containment thanks to their ability to jump high and dig far, and early and careful socialization.
Earlier this year, a wolfdog owner told Newsweek the things he wished people knew about the crossbreed.
"I love watching Hallu love his friends, I thought others might too," Hyndman said, explaining why she shared the video on TikTok.
In the comments, animal lovers shared their reactions to the adorable moment. One commenter said: "Love this so much. Dog friendships are my favorite," while another wrote: "We all need friends like that."
"You could just see the excitement," said another, while one viewer added: "His whole face and body language changed! So precious."
This isn't the first time a dog's friendship has delighted people online, either. Earlier this year a pair of dogs who are "built-in best friends" were sent to a shelter together when their owner got a new puppy. Viewers were also very taken with a dog who fell in love with a tiny rescue kitten and they quickly became the best of friends.
