LANSING, MI – You can own a section of the Mackinac Bridge.
As it as in previous years, the Michigan Department of Transportation is making sections of original steel grating (the green platform that makes a humming noise when you drive over it) from the Mackinac Bridge deck available at auction.
MDOT is selling five, identical pieces of the grating separately to the highest bidder. Each piece is approximately 5.5 feet by 38 feet and 5 inches deep. Each piece features corrosion and section loss appropriate to steel that is 60 years old, according to MDOT.

In addition, each piece weighs about 2 tons. The grating was originally coated with lead-based paint and while much of this is gone, buyers will be required to sign a “hold harmless agreement” related to the lead paint and the structural condition of the grating.
Prospective buyers can see a copy of the agreement, here. The auction ends at 2 p.m. on Nov. 18.
MDOT will cut the grating section into two shorter pieces for ease of shipping if the buyer desires. It will also load the grating for transport but is not responsible for securing, etc...
Price of the one cut is included in the bid. No other cutting or manipulation of the grating will be completed by MDOT.
