Lincoln resident Michael LoCicero has written, produced and starred in a new independent film, “Respite Road.”

Thriller features local landmarks

LINCOLN – “Respite Road,” a new film written and produced by Michael LoCicero, opens with a scene shot at The Lodge Pub in Lincoln before taking viewers on a New England road trip with a twist.

LoCicero, a Lincoln resident and founder of JL Pictures LLC, is in post-production on the psychological thriller after dedicating the last several years to the passion project.

The film tells the story of a young married couple, whose trip to the family cabin in New Hampshire becomes a fight for survival when they cross paths with two ex-convicts on the run.

LoCicero, who went to school for theater, acted for years in a variety of productions before getting the bug to create his own work.

“My family owns a cabin up in Danbury, New Hampshire, and I knew I wanted to do something up there,” LoCicero said. “My wife and I have always been avid true crime show watchers, and I’m a big fan of the thriller genre in general.”

His film draws inspiration from a number of sources, including a particular episode of the CBS show “48 Hours” telling the real-life story of a group that broke into a family’s cabin in Utah three days before Christmas, opening the family’s presents before the homeowners return and havoc unfolds.

“It’s awful what went down, but also extremely intriguing and interesting,” LoCicero said. “They were sitting in someone else’s home, down on their luck, obviously not in a good place to be committing these types of crimes. But they’re filming themselves opening the presents, almost pretending to be this happy middle class family.”

The filmmaker said he knew he wanted to write a home-invasion thriller story, and was inspired by the case to “write something that focuses a lot more on the criminals as opposed to the victims or the heroes of the story.”

LoCicero, whose style is inspired by filmmakers like the Coen brothers, said he wanted to paint a parallel picture between the criminals and the married couple in his story.

“I wanted it to feel very realistic, and have the kind of tension and suspense that keeps you at the edge of your seat, like you’re watching something actually unfold,” he said, making viewers feel like they’re watching a documentary or show like “Dateline.”

“The cinematography feels less like a documentary and more like a movie, but the intent is still to remain as realistic as possible,” he explained. “Instead of jump scares and a lot of violence, I want the audience to really feel like a fly on the wall, getting to know these characters and their conflicts.”

“Respite Road” premiered last month at a private showing for cast and crew, held drive-in style at the Hearthside House in Lincoln.

Asked whether Rhode Island residents will recognize any familiar sights in the film, he said Lincoln residents were sure to.

“About 30 percent of the film was shot locally in Lincoln and parts of Cumberland,” he said, with the rest shot at his family’s cabin in N.H.

Local scenes include the opening shot at The Pub, the Lincoln Shopping Center on Front Street, and various scenic roadways throughout town.

“It was great to be able to shoot close to my home, and Lincoln and Cumberland have such beautiful rural, wooded areas. We were really able to make it appear like we could be in New Hampshire or on the way to New Hampshire, as they are later in the film.”

LoCicero, who lives in Lincoln with his wife and son, produced the film alongside Nick Mazonowicz, Mark Fogarty, Anne Mulhall and Mark Greene, and starred as one of four leads with David S. Pridemore, Rosanna Jimenez and Sean Carmichael.

“I’m really proud of the final product,” LoCicero said. “I want this to be the first of many that we make under the production company we created. We’re hoping to establish ourselves with this movie, and hopefully become a kind of hub in R.I. and New England for independent films.”

LoCicero shoots a scene for the film with actor Sean Carmichael, and camera assistant Renan de Araujo.
