Pure Barre Woodbridge is raising the bar on its outreach to the community. The studio’s Foundations class is now taught in Spanish, as well as English, and has been very well received.
“The avalanche of engagement via social media and overall interest in our studio and class offerings is a testament to the gap we are filling for Spanish speakers in the area,” said Amalhin Shek, bilingual Pure Barre teacher.
An Unmet Need in the Community
The Spanish class programming comes from a desire to offer a solution to an unmet need in the community, staff says. Theirs is the first Pure Barre studio and the first boutique fitness studio to offer classes in Spanish.
“We are pioneering a fun and accessible fitness program,” said instructor Madalynn Habron. “Pure Barre Woodbridge endeavors to build an inclusive, safe, and respectful space where people can come and feel empowered, no matter what language they speak or where they were born.”
Pure Barre features four group class formats that deliver an effective total body barre workout focused on low-impact, high-intensity movements. Each beginner at the studio starts with the Foundations class as an introduction to their methodology. Now bilingual Spanish speakers have the opportunity to start Pure Barre in Spanish by attending this new Foundations class.
“Offering Foundations in Spanish adds the welcoming layer, such that bilingual clients who are more comfortable speaking in Spanish, or who have never participated in group fitness or directed exercise routines can understand the specific terminology and set-ups that we use,” Shek said. “I make sure to weave in the key English terms we use in our classic classes throughout the Foundations class in Spanish.”
How it Developed
The program developed organically based on the language skills of the Woodbridge staff. With Shek as the first bilingual instructor, the bilingual sales team members began reaching out to the Spanish speaking community. Now the programming is thriving, and the studio hopes to grow it even more.
“Anyone out there in the Latino community who would like to lose weight, tone their bodies, gain muscle, or is simply just looking for a way to be active and have fun while working out, then Pure Barre is the place to be!” said Fabiola Zeballos, a bilingual Pure Barre sales associate and a Spanish Language Consultant (SLC). “If Spanish is your primary language, please consider visiting us and take a Free Spanish Foundations class!”
Now that the Spanish Foundations class programming is up and running, staff hopes it will offer a welcoming community for Spanish language speakers, as well as English speakers.
“With everything going on in the world today, we want to build an oasis,” said Chelsea Shea, owner of the Woodbridge studio.
For all clients, Pure Barre’s goals are to lift and tone muscles while improving strength, agility and flexibility. The added bonus of participants feeling a strong sense of community is evident.

This place is awesome and the people here at Pure Barre in Woodbridge are wonderful.”
For now, bilingual instructors are focusing on developing this new segment of the studio.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to tap into my language skills in order to bring wellness to a segment of the community that traditionally has not had this sort of dedicated environment in our county,” Shek said. “Making Pure Barre Woodbridge an accessible and welcoming space is our number one priority as we continue to drive the ethos that Pure Barre truly is for everybody.”
