This time next year Lamborghini will be well on its way to only selling electrified supercars and hypercars as the Volkswagen Group’s most outlandish brand greens up its game.
That makes 2022 the final year of pure combustion power at Lamborghini - and its President warns they are almost all spoken for.
Lamborghini President Stephan Winkelmann has confirmed that the company is in its final year of pure combustion power for its Aventador and Hurucan before hybrids and plug-in hybrids join the range.
Lamborghini has a three-model range, with the Aventador in its final year, the Hurucan also late in its cycle and the Urus SUV hitting its straps and taking the brand to a record of 8405 sales. It’s also unique in selling non-turbocharged sports cars (though the Urus SUV uses a twin-turbo V8).
"It will be the last time that we only offer combustion engines," Winkelmann told Autoweek, insisting it was already off to a “very good start” for 2022.
Lamborghini is scheduled to reveal four new models this year, all planned with electrication, including a plug-in hybrid Urus and two two-seat sports cars at different price points.
The Audi-managed company has allocated €1.5 billion to switch to electrification, and there will be a full battery-electric Lamborghini in the second half of the decade, most likely a four-door sedan.
During Lamborghini’s earnings report, Winkelmann told investment firms to expect: "a range that surprises everyone – surprising to everyone in a positive sense."
