Pure Politics - And Response (2) - The Chattanoogan

Joe Biden said on MSNBC, “some of the Court are beginning to realize their legitimacy is being questioned in ways that hadn’t been questioned in the past.” He meant their legitimacy is questioned when the leftist crowd don’t get decisions that advance their ProgressiveX agenda.

Justice Thomas addressed the college admissions matter with reference to the constitution and law. The other side tried to use the “equal protection clause” of the 14th Amendment to somehow justify Harvard barring Asians admission to college on the basis of their race.

In the matter of government paying off certain student debt, Sen Schumer was quick to use the term MAGA Court tying the ruling to politics. He must have forgotten both Biden and Pelosi said there’s no authority for a President to pay off student loans.

Schumer’s comments and the three dissenters are sending a clear message that they were fine with millions of Americans who paid their own debts of all kinds having to pay off certain loans “Free Stuff” Joe chose to forgive as he seeks re-election. That, too, is politics.

When Ruth Bader Ginsberg was on the Court, I don’t recall 36 year member of Congress, Nancy Pelosi, calling for term limits for Justices as she is now. That, again, is just pure politics.

Ralph Miller

I don’t understand Mr. Miller’s point.

If he is trying to say that politics are playing a role in the Supreme Court’s decision-making, or in the selection of the justices, I would agree.

It was pure politics, and some legal acrobatics, for the Court to latch onto an obscure and discredited legal theory—a constitutional version of “originalism”— and cherry-pick historical precedent in order to come up with its decision in the Bruen case involving the Second Amendment allowing persons to carry a loaded handgun in public for self-defense. If its such a constitutional right, why aren't we allowed to carry our handguns into the Capital itself, or into any courthouse, or into any school? Hello! This isn’t the 18th Century. and modern America in not the Wild West.

And it was pure politics for Senator McConnell and the Republican controlled Senate to refuse to consider Obama’s nominee for the Court for almost 10 months, yet rush through Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination in 30 days.

Yes, I agree Biden’s plan to forgive student debt was pure politics. And it was pure politics for Trump’s not to push for a badly needed infrastructure bill because he wasn’t willing to raise the taxes to pay for it. One might question all of the elements of Biden’s infra structure legislation, but he at least had the guts to get it done, unlike Trump. And he had to compromise to get it. Isn’t that “pure politics” also?

Both side play politics - so what's your point - other than to take cheap shots at the other side?

Mr. Caudle is correct in his reply to Mr. Miller that both parties participate in pure politics. However the point Mr. Miller was making is that the student loan scam is the most blatant vote buying program the Democrats have come up with since the Great Society almost 60 years ago. They might as well just give the students $10,000 in walking around money like they always have in Chicago, Detroit, Newark and other Democrat paradises.

Even a moron like Biden who graduated 86th in a class of 95 at one of the lowest rated law schools in the country would know it wouldn't stand up to SCOTUS review. Nancy Pelosi told him as Mr. Miller pointed out.

I'm appalled at the lack of integrity and self respect these whiners exhibit. Apparently this is why very few worry about our $32 trillion deficit. Hey we just won't pay it when the bill comes due. If you signed a $20,000 loan document to attend some directional school and major in Gender Studies, Black History or 14th Century French literature you got scammed. And any parent or school guidance  director who recommended you do so should also be responsible for half the loan balance.

The Student Loan scheme covers up the bigger problem with so called higher education. The admissions people are like car salesmen, once they have one's loan approved then they are on to the next sucker. I would recommend if a student with a loan who doesn't graduate or obtain a job within a year that the school is responsible for half their loan balance also.

With the Tennessee Promise program no student should ever borrow money for the first two years of education after high school. Many graduates of our community colleges start out at a higher salary than college grads with worthless degrees and no debt on student loans. If one desires to attend a four year college they are much more likely to get a scholarship or even work while you attend class in a high paying job.

Another alternative if you don't mind working hard is the apprenticeship programs the trade unions have. I know our local IBEW  has a wonderful Joint Apprentice Training Center. Or one might look at the Mechatronics partnership between VW and Chattanooga State.

You might also consider the military. After three or four years of active duty, one comes out with a skill and oh, also by the way, the military pays your college expense. I have a feeling that those whining about their debt would not be interested in serving their country.
