The X-Men began life as idealistic young heroes, but a lifetime of facing hate and fear has changed them in some devastating ways, and that's particularly true for Hank McCoy's Beast. Once the heart of the team, the Krakoan era saw Beast given the responsibility of protecting the new mutant nation from outside threats. As the head of the mutant CIA, X-Force, Beast has quickly been corrupted, and recently enacted a plan to ensure that whatever the future holds, he'll be there to protect mutant interests.
In a preview of X-Force #42 from Benjamin Percy, Paul Davidson, Guru-eFX and Joe Caramagna, the team continue their quest through time, traveling to the far future in an attempt to defeat the many versions of Beast who will exist thanks to this process. Previously, the team dealt with a demonic version of Beast which had crowned itself the God of All Mutants, but now they're facing off against something deadlier - a version of Beast enhanced with the technology of the ultimate mutant-killing machine, Nimrod. Enjoy a preview of the issue and its official summary below:
X-Men's Beast Just Became the New Nimrod
THE GHOST CALENDARS! BEAST’s epic long game plays out in the only way it could - with NIMROD’S ultimate plan successful, HANK McCOY survives and thrives! But what will this mean for mutantkind, and does X-FORCE still have time to stop it?
Last issue, it was shown that Beast stored clones of himself in ancient monuments, in an attempt to prepare for any possible future scenario. Now, the version of Beast buried under Stonehenge awakens in a future where the X-Men lost their fight against Nimrod's Orchis organization, and the world is ruled by machines. Beast's 'coffin' has redesigned his body, merging his biology with Nimrod's unbeatable design. He also carries the Cerebro Sword, which contains a telepathic record of all mutant minds - a key tool in being able to resurrect them. Sadly, Beast has little interest in just bringing mutants back - his intention is to rule the world, and X-Force are here to stop him.
Beast's Final Villain Transformation Is His Worst
After Beast left Krakoa to run his own Weapons of X outfit - staffed by his own clones and mindless versions of Wolverine - an elderly Quentin Quire traveled back through time with a warning for X-Force. Beast's deadly contingency plans were set to ruin Earth, and they needed to surgically cut him from the timestream, working backwards so as not to miss any of his fail safes. However, Quentin warned them he was saving the worst for last - a version of Beast who has adapted Nimrod's tech and seemingly intends to turn the machine villain's final victory against it.
The upcoming Fall of X will see Nimrod defeat the X-Men, setting the world on a path towards AI domination. It's into this future that Beast has birthed his new self, creating a potential dilemma for X-Force - if Beast can actually bring back mutants in this future, isn't he a better enemy to reign supreme than Nimrod, who despises all biological life? Hank McCoy may have become a monster -even replacing the final villain of mutantkind - but he's also the one person with a plan to beat the machines at their own game. How can X-Force justify defeating Beast in these circumstances, and why does Quire seem to believe it's vital to do so? These questions will be answered when the full issue arrives, but for now, X-Men fans are left with the knowledge that a beloved original team member has hit his lowest point, physically transforming into a new version of Nimrod.
X-Force #42 is available from Marvel Comics July 12.
