GRANDVILLE, MI – Pure Mex Tacos and Tequila has been serving authentic Mexican dishes in Grandville for one year, but with generations of experience.

Owner Federico “Fredy” Gomez Jr., who owns the restaurant with his parents, Federico Gomez Sr. and Maria, comes from a long line of family members who have owned Mexican restaurants throughout the country.

The restaurant, located at 4553 Canal Ave. SW, offers a large menu with authentic Mexican cuisine like chilaquiles rojos, asado de boda and birria de res.

“Those are just certain dishes that you really wouldn’t find in a Mexican restaurant that’s used to pushing out combination dinners,” Gomez said.

Chilaquiles rojos (fried tortilla strips, salsa roja, sour cream, avocado, queso fresco and onion; topped with two fried eggs and thin cut steak) sells for $14; asado de boda (pork tips and ribs in a chili sauce; served with Mexican rice, refried beans and tortillas) goes for $15; and birria de res (slow cooked beef stew served with Mexican rice, black beans and tortillas) is priced at $15.

“My mom and dad come from Mexico,” Gomez said, with a lot of the restaurant’s recipes and sauces coming from his mother. “She’s the chef in the family.”

Gomez said customers tell him they “have never found these things here in Michigan.”

“I even have the Hispanic community come in here and be like, ‘You know what? I haven’t had torta ahogada since I was in Mexico,’” he said.

Pure Mex offers torta ahogada, which translates to “drowned” sandwich, (pork carnitas, spread of beans, onions, candied jalapeños known as “cowboy candy,” and served over a tomato sauce with cabbage) for $15. It’s a staple food of Guadalajara, Mexico.

Of course, Pure Mex also sells Americanized Mexican food items like chimichangas and Tex-Mex tacos.

“We try to do the best of both worlds,” he said.

The chimichanga original (deep fried flour tortilla stuffed with beef tip or shredded chicken; topped with queso americano; and served with rice, beans, romaine, sour cream, guacamole, and pico de gallo) goes for $14.

The Tex Mex taco dinner (three crunchy or soft tacos; choice of chicken or ground beef; topped with romaine, cheese, sour cream, tomatoes; and served with Mexican rice and refried beans) goes for $14 and the Tex Mex street taco (crunchy or soft tortilla; choice of ground beef or shredded chicken; and topped with romaine lettuce, shredded cheese, sour cream, and tomatoes) sells for $4.

Pure Mex features eight taco dinners (three tacos are served with each dinner) ranging from $14 to $18, including a red snapper fish taco dinner with chipotle sour cream sauce, for $18. There are seven varieties of street tacos and two “premium tacos” (Anaheim and cochinita pibil) which all sell for $4 each.

“We sell a lot of tacos here,” Gomez said.

The menu is filled with many more options including burritos, fajitas and nachos, that can be viewed on their website, here. Customers can also follow on Facebook and Instagram.

Gomez said Pure Mex got a liquor license in June and some customers were disappointed they couldn’t originally order alcohol when the restaurant opened in 2022.

“I invite those people who were discouraged,” he said. “Come back, try us out.”

Drinks include a cocktail menu and draft beers such as Dos Equis Lager, Pacifico and Bell’s Two Hearted Ale.

Pure Mex Tacos and Tequila is open Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. - 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. - 10:30 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. - 9 p.m.

Pure Mex also has a location in Richland.
