Out of the four feature films that Ryan Coogler has directed to date—Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever—not a one of them has gone down without Michael B. Jordan on hand, typically in a leading role. (Not even being dead in the MCU stopped Jordan from making a brief return appearance in Coogler’s second Black Panther film, popping up in the spirit realm to give Letitia Wright a villainous pep talk.) Now, the long-time pair are gearing up for their next collaboration together, with Deadline reporting that Coogler and Jordan have signed on to make a new movie together—the first original, non-franchise film Coogler has written for the duo since Fruitvale Station back in 2013.
Both men have had pretty meteoric careers since then, of course, with Coogler having brought in more than $2 billion at the box office in the intervening decade. (Most of which can be attributed to his Marvel films, but the first Creed didn’t hurt the total.) Jordan, meanwhile, has become a full-on movie star, having already made the leap to directing himself, helming Creed III last year from a story that Coogler co-wrote.
Descriptions on the two’s new project are almost entirely nil, although it’s being described as a “genre” project, which sounds like an interesting direction for the pair to head in. (Jordan got one of his first big breaks in the world of science fiction, co-starring in Josh Trank’s found-footage superhero drama Chronicle—a film that nearly beat the pair’s follow-up collaboration Fantastic Four at the box office, despite costing about a tenth of the budget to make.) “Genre” is a pretty wide descriptor, of course, but it’ll be interesting to see what Coogler and Jordan can do together with an original story, now that they’ve both carved out some pretty serious leeway for themselves in the industry.
