It’s been almost 60 years since The Sound of Music premiered in theaters, but fans of the Oscar-winning film are in for a special holiday treat, with the release of a new Sound of Music “Super Deluxe Edition” Soundtrack that features Christopher Plummer’s original vocals for the first time ever.
Though Plummer had an adequate singing voice, producers of the film felt that it was “not the polished professional sound it needed to be” for the movie, according to reports. While the veteran actor sang the songs on camera, his vocals were later dubbed over by well-known playback singer Bill Lee for the 1965 film and corresponding soundtrack.
Now, Plummer’s original vocals are finally seeing the light of day with a new four-disc box set that includes the full movie score remastered in hi-res audio plus a new Dolby Atmos mix of the original soundtrack. The set also includes — for the first time — Plummer’s versions of “Edelweiss” and “Something Good,” along with more than 40 other previously unreleased tracks, demos and rare outtakes from the cast. Julie Andrews’ renditions of “Do-Re-Mi,” “My Favorite Things” and the titular song to the film (and Rodgers & Hammerstein musical) are also included.
The collectors edition set features four CDs housed in a 64-page hardbound box, with liners from film preservationist Mike Matessino.
Amazon also has a two-CD or three-LP vinyl version of the newly-remastered Sound of Music soundtrack available, with 14 previously unreleased tracks. However, these releases feature the film versions of the songs; the only way to hear Plummer’s versions of the songs is through the full four-disc set.
Released by Concord Music Group’s Craft Recordings, the new release comes ahead of the annual airing of The Sound of Music on ABC, which has become a holiday tradition. You can watch The Sound of Music on ABC this year on Sunday, Dec. 17. Don’t want to wait? You can stream The Sound of Music movie online by renting or buying it on Amazon.
You can also buy a special 50th anniversary edition of The Sound of Music on Blu-ray or DVD on Amazon here. The set includes behind-the-scenes featurettes, a documentary on the real Von Trapp family, and audio commentary from Plummer, Andrews, director Robert Wise, and other cast and crew.
