The San Francisco-Marin Food Bank lost the use of four delivery trucks after detergent was poured into the gas tanks in San Rafael, the nonprofit reported.
The organization was forced to rent trucks to meet their six scheduled deliveries on Monday, said Keely Hopkins, a spokesperson for the nonprofit.
“Four trucks were tampered with over the weekend and they had to go into the shop,” Hopkins said. “We filed a police report and we are working with local officials to investigate the situation.”
She did not know how long it will take for the trucks to be repaired or the cost.
The food pantry at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Marin City was one of the delivery locations. Volunteers said the food usually arrives at 9 a.m., but about 60 people were forced to wait until 11:30 a.m.
“We got a big line of people and no food because someone sabotaged delivery trucks in San Rafael,” said Roger Krakow, a volunteer at the pantry. “It seems like pure evil.”
Nancy Masterson, another volunteer, said the pantry helps feed not just local families but people outside Marin City, including boat residents anchored on Richardson Bay.
“Many of the people who use the food pantry have families as big as six,” Masterson said.
San Rafael police Sgt. Justin Graham said the incident is under investigation.
