CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, the fall 2020 William N. Skirball Writers Center Stage Series will take place virtually, rather than at Case Western Reserve University’s Maltz Performing Arts Center.

Tickets for the virtual series, which kicks off Sept. 17, are available by visiting the Cuyahoga County Public Library events section. Lovers of literature can purchase tickets for single author talks or subscribe for the full fall season.

According to Rob Rua, assistant director of marketing and communications for the library, the Writers Center Stage Series is the signature fundraising event for the Cuyahoga County Public Library Foundation. The foundation helps support a variety of programs, many of which benefit children.

The event, now in its 17th season, began with a single author talk, but proved popular enough that it currently boasts spring and fall sections, each featuring three acclaimed authors.

“This season’s going to look a little different, but I think it’s still going to be a lot of fun,” says Rua.

Madeleine Miller opens the virtual series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17. Miller is the author of “Circe,” a New York Times bestseller that celebrates the female spirit and is rooted in Greek mythology. The work is now being adapted for an HBO Max series.

Josh Malerman will appear remotely at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15. Malerman is the author of the post-apocalyptic “Bird Box,” which was adapted for a 2018 film that scored big on Netflix.

Malerman’s other novels include “Malorie” and the horror western “Unbury Carol.” Aside from his writing, Malerman is a musician, best known for his work fronting the band The High Strung.

Susan Choi wraps up the fall season at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19. Her resume includes a National Book Award for fiction for 2019′s “Trust Exercise,” a Guggenheim Fellowship and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Her novel “American Woman” was a finalist for the 2004 Pulitzer Prize. She currently teaches at Yale University.

Each author will offer a presentation of 45 minutes to an hour. The “Crowdcast” platform promises a user-friendly virtual experience, without onerous installations and downloads.

Tickets for individual author talks are $20. Subscribers to the fall series pay $100, though they also earn an invitation to participate in an online book club with Maureen Corrigan. The book critic for NPR’s “Fresh Air” will lead discussions of one book by each author.

The benefactor level is $200 and includes a private meet and greet -- virtual, of course -- with each author, as well as all benefits received at the subscriber level.

As an added feature, the 2020 lineup includes a remote book-signing option. For $30, readers will receive a signed, hardcover copy of a book by one of the featured authors, shipping included.

Rua says he hopes the series will return to its intimate, in-person format in the spring, though he adds, “Safety is the number one priority.”

The Cuyahoga County Public Library can be reached at 216-398-1800.
