PEMBROKE — An investment of $4.5 million will bring 100 jobs to Robeson County after a dessert manufacture completes its expansion at its Pembroke operation.

Steven Roberts Original Desserts LLC plans to incorporate a new production line, build a new warehouse and buy new equipment for its facility located at 701 S. Jones St. in Pembroke.

“Steven Roberts Original Desserts considered possible locations from our existing locations prior to making our choice of Robeson County,” said Steve Fabos, chief executive officer of Steven Roberts Original Deserts. “In the Town of Pembroke we found the necessary conditions that fit our facility needs, had access to strong workforce assets and was convenient to growing North American consumer markets. We are grateful to North Carolina’s leaders, who were willing to work closely with our management selection team in addressing our objectives for this expansion. This expansion will increase our total employment in Pembroke to exceed 400 employees.”

For more than 20 years, SROriginals, or Steven Roberts Original Desserts, has been the premium dessert supplier to all segments of food service and retail in-store bakeries. Founded in 1995, SROriginals, LLC is a privately held company owned by Charles Kosmont and Steven Fabos. The company is headquartered in Denver, Colorado.

“The Town of Pembroke is very excited to have this expansion and the creation of 100 new jobs in Pembroke is tremendous,” Pembroke Mayor Greg Cummings said. “This investment will continue to strengthen the tax base in Pembroke and Robeson County. I want to personally thank Steve and Charles (SROriginals owners) for their dedication to our partnership.”

The economic impact of the 100 new jobs will be significant for Robeson County, said Lance Herndon, county Board of Commissioners chairman.

“It further illustrates our ability to provide a qualified workforce,” Herndon said. “Partnering with innovative companies such as Steven Roberts Original Desserts will continue to make Robeson strong.”

Faline Dial, vice chair of the county Board of Commissioners, said the investment “is extremely positive and impactful” for Pembroke and surrounding communities.

“During such unprecedented times of a pandemic, all Robesonians should be proud that companies such as Steven Roberts are continually committed to making our county as strong as possible,” Dial said. “I’m especially excited about the new jobs!”

Recruiting SROriginals to increase investment in Robeson County called for a team effort across local, state and regional organizations, said Channing Jones, executive director of Robeson County’s Office of Economic Development.

“We’ve always relied on terrific partners to win new business and grow jobs, but this project called for an especially long list of allies and advocates,” Jones said. “County and town officials worked with Robeson Community College, the N.C. Rural Infrastructure Authority, the Robeson County Committee of 100, N.C. Southeast, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina and the North Carolina Department of Commerce in developing the project. Our key statewide partners at EDPNC were instrumental in facilitating this exciting opportunity for Robeson County.”
