Texan filmmaker takes over ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ sequel after original directors are ousted - The Dallas Morning News

A sudden change of directors after a week of shooting might not seem like the best sign for an upcoming film. But the next chapter of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, which is being filmed in Bulgaria, will at least be made by a Texan now. Citing creative differences, the film’s backers ousted directors Andy and Ryan Tohill, replacing them with Austin filmmaker David Blue Garcia, Deadline reports.

Garcia premiered his first feature film, Tejano, at the Dallas International Film Festival in 2018, where it picked up an Audience Award, before ending up on HBO earlier this year. Shot for $58,000, the intense thriller with slick cinematography centers on a drug mule and is set in Texas.

A direct sequel to the original 1974 horror film directed by Tobe Hooper, the upcoming Texas Chainsaw project ignores other sequels, prequels and remakes. This is, of course, following in the footsteps of the Halloween franchise, which hit pay dirt using the same formula in 2018. The most recent Texas Chainsaw film was 2017′s Leatherface, the eighth followup to the original movie.

Footage the previous directors shot will be scrapped and Garcia will start over from scratch, according to Deadline.
