‘Thank you for being there for us since day one’: Anna’s Taqueria closed its original location - Boston.com

After 25 years, the original location of Anna’s Taqueria has closed up shop. The chain announced the news on social media Thursday afternoon.

“Dear Beacon Street,” the post began. “Thank you for being there for us since day one. Thank you for all of the amazing memories we have and will always cherish. It has been a tough decision, but we have chosen to permanently close the doors of our first location at 1412 Beacon Street. While the global pandemic is certainly unprecedented, this closure is not a result of COVID-19. Changes to restaurant operations in the past several years and the rise of food delivery apps has allowed our team to consolidate service to our other seven locations throughout Greater Boston, including our other Brookline spot right around the corner. Marking this our 25th year in business, we cannot thank you enough for all of the love and support you have shown throughout the years. With Love, Anna’s Taqueria.”

“While this was an incredibly difficult decision to come to, it is one we’ve been thinking about for a long time now,” owner Betsy Kamio said in a press release. “The Brookline community has embraced Anna’s for 25 years, and while we know this location’s closure will come as a disappointment to some, we are grateful to have our Harvard Street store just seven blocks away.”

The Brookline location opened in 1995 and became a popular destination for college students to get their fix of affordable burritos, quesadillas, and bowls. It was founded by Michael “Mike” Yoshiomi Kamio, a Richmond, Calif., native who passed away in February 2019.

There are now seven locations of Anna’s Taqueria, though the branches at MIT’s Stratton Center and the Prudential Center remain closed due to COVID-19. Find addresses, hours, and ordering options for the remaining locations here.
