During a year when most of us watched more hours of Netflix than we could have ever imagined, the streamer is giving out stats showing just how popular some of its original series have become. According to Newsweek, Netflix has shared data revealing its top five most popular original shows, and some of the titles just might surprise you.
Just yesterday, Netflix announced that Shonda Rhimes’ new series Bridgerton, a period drama that’s gained a massive following since its Dec. 25 debut on the platform, pulled in 63 million viewers, making it the fifth most watched original. Ranking just below at No. 4 is Tiger King, the docuseries phenomenon about a big cat breeder and his eccentric life that most of us binged in the early days of lockdown. With 64 million households tuning in during Tiger King‘s first four weeks, it earned its place on the list of top five originals.
Next up is Stranger Things Season 3, which pulled in 64 million households, then Money Heist, which earned the No. 2 spot with 65 million audience members tuning in to the Spanish drama. And as for the No. 1 show, Henry Cavill fans will be pleased. The Witcher, Cavill’s fantasy series, came in at No. 1 with 76 million households watching the show in its first four weeks on Netflix.
To recap, here’s the Netflix ranking for five most-watched original shows, per Newsweek. Just keep in mind, Netflix counts views as at least two minutes of a show, so if you watch a couple of minutes of Tiger King then turn it off, it still counts as watching the show.

Newsweek’s report comes not long after Variety shared a report of the top shows on Netflix in 2020, referencing stats collected by Reelgood. According to the streaming tracker, Cocomelon, The Office, and The Queen’s Gambit were the top three shows in the list of 50 top-ranked Netflix programs last year. Reelgood determined the stats by looking at every show’s total number of appearances in the Netflix Top 10 and their ranking on the list. While nearly 200 different shows landed on the Top 10 in 2020, a majority of the programs were Netflix Originals.
According to Reelgood’s Top 10 tracker, the 5 top-ranked Netflix programs of 2020 were:
- Cocomelon
- The Office
- The Queen’s Gambit
- Tiger King
- Ozark
