Netflix invests more in producing its own original content than any other network or platform, billions of dollars on an annual basis. Although an expensive practice, it's one that has put them at the top of the competition and has helped them rake in millions in subscriber numbers. Several new original series are released every year, but a big part of the appeal that keeps on making people return are the sequels to already popular shows.
There are a ton of Netflix original series that are returning in 2021, and this list looks at some of the best. There are several other popular shows which are also returning in 2021, Lucifer and Black Mirror to name a few, but they have been excluded as they are not true Netflix originals (created by other networks).
10 Warrior Nun - Season 2
Warrior Nun's premise was as crazy as its title was quirky. Ava Silva, an orphan teenager who has been a tetraplegic (paralyzed in all four limbs) since birth, discovers that she has superpowers after having been resurrected from death by a group of demon-hunting "warrior nuns." Straight out of an anime indeed.
Based on the Warrior Nun Areala comic book series, it was initially being developed as a film by creator Simon Barry until Netflix decided to turn it into a series.
9 Narcos: Mexico - Season 3
Movies and TV shows about drug cartels and related activities have really picked up the pace in terms of popularity in recent years, and it represents a niche in the crime-drama genre that audiences have come to like.
8 Ragnarok - Season 2
Netflix, as an international platform, has done wonders for the globalization of various foreign-language series and movies. The German sci-fi Dark and the Spanish crime-thriller Money Heist are just two examples that have achieved massive popularity through the platform.
Norse mythology has always been a great source where many pop-culture elements take their inspiration, and Ragnarok is no different. A Norwegian series, it revolves around a teenager who learns that he is the embodiment of the God of Thunder, Thor.
7 Ozark - Season 4
Ozark has been compared by many to be basically Netflix's own Breaking Bad. Whether that's true or not is up to the individual viewer to decide, but the similarities between the two cannot exactly be ignored.
Martin Byrde, a financial adviser, is forced to move to the remote Lake of the Ozarks region with his family in order to launder money for the Mexican cartel. Arrested Development actor, Jason Bateman, plays the role of the head of the Byrde family, and veteran Hollywood actress Laura Linney can be seen playing his wife in a drama that is as much about family as it is about crime.
6 Love Death + Robots - Season 2
Googling Love Death + Robots will show that it's generally categorized as an "animated series," but it's so much more than that and far from the realm of what most would call a "cartoon." Everything about the show just screams eccentric and a certain aesthetic at first glance.
Each episode is a self-contained story, most of which are largely ambiguous, with an art style that drastically varies from episode to episode, but is equally artistic in all. Created by Deadpool director, Tim Miller, the series was the creative brainchild of him and famous Hollywood director, David Fincher.
5 The Umbrella Academy - Season 3
Live-action superhero teams are a dime a dozen nowadays, and although that's what The Umbrella Academy essentially may be on the surface, the non-stop family drama is one of the best.
Based on the comic-book series of the same name by writer Gerard Way (lead vocalist of the rock band My Chemical Romance), from Dark Horse Comics, it tells the story of a family of adopted siblings with superpowers. Some feel that the previous two seasons have followed a somewhat repetitive plot - "overpowered sibling destroys the world," so it remains to be seen how things will be shaken up for the third season.
4 Space Force - Season 2
Steve Carell will probably never outgrow his own shadow as Michael Scott from The Office, but that doesn't mean he hasn't been involved in any other great projects.
Created by himself and Parks and Recreation creator, Greg Daniels, it stars Carell in the lead as General Mark Naird, the head of the United States Space Force trying to get America's "boots on the moon" once again. At 38%, the show's Rotten Tomatoes rating leaves something to be desired, but the audience rating tells a different story, at 75%.
3 Russian Doll - Season 2
The first season of Russian Doll took the "time loop" trope and molded it into something fantastically creative and enjoyable. On the eve of her 36th birthday, Nadia Vulvokov discovers that she is stuck in an inescapable cycle where she keeps dying and repeating the same events.
The show's strength heavily relies on the amazing performance of its lead actress, Natasha Lyonne, from Orange Is the New Black, who is also the director and creator of the series.
2 Sex Education - Season 3
Sex can be an awkward topic to talk about for many, especially between parents and kids, which is why Netflix's British teen-drama Sex Education is doing the job for them.
The premise centers around Otis Milburn, a teenager involuntarily knowledgeable about all matters sex-related due to his mother's profession as a sex therapist. Along with his delinquent friend (and secret love interest), Maeve Wiley, he opens up a sex-therapy business in his school to help students with problems too embarrassing to be asked about anywhere else. A sexually explicit and open-minded comedy, it is one of Netflix's best and most surprising dramas ever.
1 Stranger Things - Season 4
Netflix's crème de la crème and their most popular and successful show ever is set to return for its fourth season in 2021, taking audiences another step closer to its fifth season, which will probably be the last.
The previous season ended with a big chunk of the core cast of characters splitting up, as the Byers family and Eleven move out of the ever-familiar town of Hawkins. So, it can be assumed that the fourth season will feature some radical changes to the status quo that had been maintained till now, and the appearance of newer characters is always something to look forward to.
