Face of pure awe: Chimpanzee sees sky for first time after 28 years caged - WRAL News

A chimpanzee named Vanilla was in awe after seeing the sky and sunlight for the first time.

Vanilla was caged for 28 years, according to her care providers – spending most of her life in small cages in a research lab in New York that's now closed. She was then transferred to California, where she was kept inside a chain-link fence cage with allegedly no grass. And no sky.

The video shows Vanilla leap into the arms of another chimp, named Dwight, for a massive hug. Then, she looks up to the sky, makes a big 'smile,' and almost seems to mouth the word 'wow.'

Her eyes are gleaming with wonder.

Dwight welcomed Vanilla to freedom with a hug as she left her enclosure. According to private sanctuary Save the Chimps, Vanilla gets along with all other 18 chimps on her island – especially Dwight.

The sanctuary says the two have a playful relationship. Vanilla likes to steal her friend's food.

Vanilla is reportedly enjoying her new environment. When she's not hanging out with Dwight, you can find her chilling on her favorite climbing platform taking in the view.
