The MCU's New Avengers Team Already Looks Like It's Repeating The Original's Failures - Screen Rant

mixdes.blogspot.com

A new team of Avengers is expected to form during the MCU's Phase 6, which means Marvel Studios might be repeating mistakes from their treatment of the original Avengers. 2012's The Avengers saw the titular team come together for the first time, then consisting of only Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk, Hawkeye, and Black Widow. Since then, several other superheroes joined the Avengers, culminating in an epic battle against Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the Mad Titan Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. With no Avengers films now planned until 2026's Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the status of the MCU's premiere superhero team is currently unclear.

The MCU's Phase 4 was the first time in Marvel Studios' history that didn't feature an Avengers film, and Phase 5 is set to continue this pattern. Instead, several new heroes have been introduced who could take their place on the Avengers team, though many other teams have also been teased, including the Thunderbolts, the Midnight Sons, and the Young Avengers. The Avengers are still Marvel Studios' primary money-maker, so it would be a shame to see the New Avengers not get the attention they deserve. One mistake with the original Avengers could easily be repeated for the New Avengers, which may spell bad news for the upcoming MCU team.

The MCU's Original Avengers Didn't Have Enough Missions Together

While the formation of the MCU's original Avengers team was incredibly exciting and ground-breaking for the franchise, the team didn't actually see much action together. Built up over four years previously, the originally Avengers finally came together in The Avengers to battle Loki and his Chitauri army on the streets of New York City. The establishment of a new team could have meant that several subsequent projects may have featured their adventures, but the Avengers only appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. For such a big team, this seemed like a waste of potential.

The MCU's original Avengers team included some of the most iconic heroes in Marvel's roster, so the fact that they didn't actually get many stories together was a shame, particularly when new heroes joined the team and stole focus from the original six. Granted, these heroes' stories developed in solo projects, but seeing them band together to save the world would have better defined their relationships. Only being featured as a team in five projects certainly wasn't enough, but it seems that this mistake is set to be repeated - and made even worse - when the MCU's New Avengers form in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

The New Avengers Team May Have Even Fewer Missions Together

Phase 4 introduced many new heroes to the MCU, and developed the more established ones, preparing everyone for the eventual team-up of the New Avengers. However, this isn't expected to occur until 2026's Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, leaving a huge gap between Avengers: Endgame and the next time audiences will see the Avengers. It's unclear who will be a part of the new team, and who will lead them, with rumors suggesting Anthony Mackie's Captain America or Paul Rudd's Ant-Man could lead - though no clear candidate has made themselves known. The fact that the New Avengers will be forming so late poses a huge problem for the team.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is set to pit the New Avengers against Kang the Conqueror and his many variants, and will be followed up by the multiverse-threatening Avengers: Secret Wars. Since Secret Wars is expected to reshape the MCU in some major ways, it's possible that the New Avengers' second outing may also be their last, meaning they will have seen much less action than the original Avengers team. Two projects is far from enough to develop the dynamic and relationships between the members of the Avengers, particularly when a lot of the action will be focused on Kang the Conqueror and the threat of incursions.

Why The MCU Will Struggle To Fix Its Avengers Team Problem

The fact that the MCU's New Avengers are only set to appear in two projects in Phase 6 means that audiences won't get much chance to see them working together. The dire reality is that there isn't a clear way to fix this issue, aside from Marvel Studios developing more regular Avengers films - which may dilute the excitement - or breaking up each Avengers film to perhaps showcase several smaller missions, though this might detract from the overall storyline. Avengers projects in Phases 4 and 5 might have fixed this problem somewhat, but the New Avengers team would have still received the same treatment as the MCU's original Avengers.
