Pipeline construction for San Diego’s Pure Water project will require the partial closure of a major intersection at Westfield UTC mall for an estimated two weeks beginning Monday.
Construction crews will be working around-the-clock to install a 48-inch wastewater pipeline and a 30-inch brine pipeline in a 20-foot-deep trench through the intersection of La Jolla Village Drive and Towne Centre Drive.
The city said a two-way traffic flow on La Jolla Village Drive will be maintained throughout the work, which is estimated to take from June 19 to July 2.
However, the northern portion of Town Centre Drive will be closed at the intersection from June 19 to 25, and the southern portion from June 25 to July 2.
Commuters were advised to avoid the area or use alternate routes. Detour information will be posted near the intersection.
Equipment staging and traffic pattern adjustments will begin after 8 p.m. on Sunday.
The pipeline work is one of 10 different projects currently underway to support Pure Water, which will eventually produce 30 million gallons of purified water daily, reducing the City’s dependence on imported water.
