Original Loki Season 2 Ending Revealed By MCU Series Director - Screen Rant

Summary

  • The original ending of Loki season 2 had Loki saving the Temporal Loom instead of destroying it and taking its place.
  • The draft of the script didn't sit well with the director, as it lacked the necessary sacrifice from Loki.
  • Destroying the Loom and assuming its responsibilities was considered the right and obvious choice for Loki's character development.

The original Loki season 2 ending suffered a big change. The Marvel Cinematic Universe series concluded with a major sacrifice from Tom Hiddleston's character. At the end of the Disney+ MCU series, Loki took the place of the TVA's Temporal Loom, but it turns out that things could have been very different.

According to Loki season 2 director Aaron Moorhead on Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of Loki Season 2, the original Loki season 2 ending did not feature Loki destroying the Temporal Loom and taking its place, but rather saving it. Loki would have "ascended the throne" after saving the Temporal Loom. However, Moorhead notes that would not have worked as well as the series' final ending, saying, "It seems so obvious now, it seems like exactly the right choice." Check out the full quote below:

"There was a draft of the script of the very end, the very end. Something wasn't sitting right with both of us about it. And the issue was, this draft didn't have Loki destroying the Loom. He saved the Loom from imploding and then ascended the throne. We all knew something was up, we just didn't know what. 'Cause it was like, well he's trying to save the Loom, he gets the throne, all of this.

But the problem was, is that he didn't have the sacrifice, and we realized, why doesn't he destroy the Loom and then have to take over the Loom's massive responsibility? He doesn't get anything out of it. It seems so obvious now, it seems like exactly the right choice. But that was a watershed moment in the development of it, when we realized Loki needs to destroy and become the Loom."

Why Loki Season 2’s Ending Was Better Than The Original

It Is All About Loki's Sacrifice

Loki as the God of Time in Loki season 2's final shot

As Moorhead said, Loki season 2's finale gave the character and the series the best possible ending. It was this Loki variant's natural journey to go from a selfish person to doing anything in his power to save his friends from the TVA. Because of that, it would have been somewhat lackluster if Loki just repaired the Temporal Loom and then went on to rule over the Citadel at the End of Time.

It is much more impactful to have Loki sacrifice the rest of his life to overtake the Temporal Loom and take over its place. Loki season 2's finale, with Thor's brother having to let go of his loved ones so that they can lead the life that they want while he holds the branching timelines in place, was perfect for the character. While extremely sad, it was a fitting note to end the series, with Loki's sacrifice allowing the multiverse to flourish but the character having nothing to gain personally from it.

Had the original Loki season 2 ending happened, the series finale would not have resonated as deeply as it did. Loki's big sacrifice was the payoff of the character's entire arc, and him simply saving the Temporal Loom and becoming an even more powerful god would not have hit as hard as the overwhelming feeling of loss that the series ended on. Due to the importance of Loki's task, a shocking ending like Loki season 2's was exactly what the series and Hiddleston's character needed, making the MCU team's choice to tinker with the ending a positive one.
