Former Republican Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum reacted to Ohioans voting in favor of legalizing marijuana and enshrining the right to abortion in the state constitution by railing against the pure democracy form of government.
Ohio voters decided in favor of Issues 1 and 2 on Tuesday, which established a right to abortion in the state constitution and legalized marijuana, respectively. Santorum, speaking on Newsmax on Tuesday, said that the matters being raised in an off-year, in which Democrats typically vote more than Republicans, also paved the way for victory for Issues 1 and 2.

"Remember these elections, off-year elections, odd-number elections are very low turnout elections. They are base elections, and the Democrats have traditionally, No. 1, outspent us, not just on odd-number-year elections but generally speaking."
Santorum also said the combination of putting abortion and marijuana on the ballot was a "secret sauce for disaster" when factoring in the election occurred during an off-year.
"No. 2, their base is more ginned up to go out and vote generally than Republicans," he said. "We've seen this now for the last several years, and so a base election, they, Democrats, outspend, and you put very sexy things like abortion and marijuana on the ballot, and a lot of young people come out and vote. It was a secret sauce for disaster in Ohio."

"I don't know what they were thinking, but that's why I thank goodness that most of the states in this country don't allow you to put everything on the ballot. Because pure democracies are not the way to run a country," he added.
The results in Ohio were part of a triumphant night for Democrats and a rough night for the GOP in various states, a year out from the pivotal 2024 presidential election.
