A partnership between Kroger and one of Houston’s longtime Black-owned barbecue joints, forged during the pandemic, has resulted in a permanent restaurant inside a supermarket on the city’s northeast side.

Kroger announced that it will open a branch of Burns Original BBQ inside its store at 14221 E. Sam Houston Pkwy N. in the Summerwood neighborhood, offering a barbecue menu that has made Burns a beloved standout on the Houston barbecue scene. The on-site Burns restaurant will open Saturday, July 3 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. with a proclamation by Mayor Sylvester Turner.

BURNS HEATS UP: Meet the family continuing Burns Original BBQ legacy

Burns has been a fixture in the Acres Home community since it was founded in 1973. In the early months of the pandemic Kroger established partnerships to help local, minority-owned businesses offering prepared meals and pop-ups. One of those was with Burns Original, which now will operate a bistro in the Summerwood Kroger offering its menu of brisket, links, turkey, ribs, family packs, and side dishes. While primarily a grab-and-go concept, there is seating for 10.

"We are excited to make history with Kroger by opening this bistro. We are forever thankful for all of the love the community and Kroger have provided to us through this journey. Our goal is to continue to serve the community, provide good barbecue, and stay true to our family traditions," said Cory Crawford, owner of Burns Original, and grandson of legendary Houston pitmaster Roy Burns.

Burns Original got a national shout-out when Anthony Bourdain visited the joint, 8307 De Priest, in 2016 for a segment of his CNN show “Parts Unknown.”
