SANTA CRUZ — The Portola Drive pop-up project will conclude a few days early, according to a press release shared by the area’s county supervisor, Manu Koenig.
A statement shared on social media late Wednesday explained that road maintenance will be performed on Portola Drive on Monday and Tuesday to remove the intersection improvements so long as weather permits. The website dedicated to the second pop-up funded by Active Transportation Plan money indicates that the lane reductions and separated bikeways would be up through July 21.
Less than 72 hours after the Portola Drive measures were celebrated at a launch party June 25, white, wavy lane delineators or separators and large, orange construction barrels were moved or thrown off of the property into nearby lots. County Road Superintendent Alex Sandoval said this and similar activity is the cause for removing the installation before its scheduled conclusion.
“That was something that came later,” he said of the decision to change direction. “It is expediting when are going to take it down.”
After the pop-up elements were tampered with, the County of Santa Cruz Department of Public Works, Ecology Action and other involved agencies elected to secure them and keep the experiment going.
“The counts were done by our traffic engineer and will be completed by this week,” Sandoval said Thursday of data gathered around pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers traveling through the affected area. “Tomorrow (Friday) is the last day.”
Drivers traveling between 36th and 41st avenues are being asked to seek alternate routes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on those dates as one lane will be closed in each direction. Traffic control will be present to keep vehicles passing through safe.
The road will be populated with crews from Public Works as well as planners from Ecology Action, who may be tasked with trying to take out nails driven into the wave delineators with a high-powered fastener after double-sided Velcro did not stand the test of the local reaction.
Ecology Action planner Amelia Conlen told the Sentinel that the deconstruction also has to do with the availability of county maintenance crews.
