ANGOLA, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) - "Tom's Donuts Original" is less than a week away from throwing a party to celebrate 50 years in business.
Tom Saylor opened the doughnut shop in 1970 near Lake James. His son Todd now runs the business.
Owners planned to host the party last year, but were unable to because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We are the world's capitol for doughnuts, we're going to proclaim it Saturday," Todd Saylor said. "My father tom Saylor is still with us, he's alive, he's 80 years old and we've been doing this for 51 years."
Fast forward years later, so much has changed. The business also offers other food like Burgers and Coney Dogs.
"We built 'Tom's Park' in honor of my father," Saylor said. "In 2019 my wife and I took over and changed the name to tom's donuts original to preserve that old fashion formula my father created 50 years ago. We've added the freshness back into the game and changed everything."
Todd says he sometimes feels the pressure to live up to the legacy his dad has built since 1970, it's a task he takes very seriously.
"It's my heritage," Saylor said. "I can't imagine not having this and all the things people experience."
While families make the trip to "Tom's Park," Todd says the tradition started by his father will live on and keep customers coming back for more.
"I wanna get it to a position where we can pass it on to my children's children," Saylor said. "I think we can do that and make sure that we can preserve the tradition as tradition keepers should."
The celebration is Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Owner Tom Saylor and tight rope walker Nick Wallenda are among the guest speakers.
