Pure Water Oceanside, Preparing For A Water Scarce Future - Patch.com

OCEANSIDE, CA — The current drought plaguing most of California and the Western United States is a reminder of the importance of projects like Pure Water Oceanside to ensure the future of our area's water supply.

According to Scientific American, More than 93% of the land in seven Western states is in drought conditions, and nearly 59% of the area is experiencing extreme or exceptional drought—the two worst conditions—according to the latest figures released by the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Most of Oceanside's drinking water is imported and requires an enormous amount of energy and cost to transport. Reliance on imported water leaves the city vulnerable to the threat of climate change, reoccurring drought, and natural disasters.

Local programs like Pure Water Oceanside are intended to diversify the city's water supply and reduce reliance on imported water by creating a local and sustainable water source for Oceanside.

Pure Water Oceanside will purify recycled water to create a new, local source of high-quality drinking water that is clean, safe, drought-proof and environmentally sound. The program will create three to five million gallons of drinking water each day, enough water to provide 32% of the City of Oceanside's water supply.

The project protects sensitive ecosystems by reducing the amount of water siphoned by imported water sources. It decreases the amount of recycled water discharged into the ocean and uses half the energy needed to transport imported water, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The water purification process uses reverse osmosis and advanced oxidation to create safe drinking water. The technology removes pharmaceuticals, chemicals, hormones, microplastics, and personal care products.

Pure Water Oceanside construction remains on schedule for completion in 2022, with several significant milestones recently completed.

Construction includes building a new water purification facility, installing new water and recycled water pipelines under Douglas Drive, North River Road, Coco Palms Dr., and Rio Vista Dr., four wells in Coco Palms, one well in Alipaz Ct., and a new recycled water pipeline on El Camino Real to the City's Fire Mountain Reservoir.

Residents are kept up to date on construction impacts to streets and other infrastructure through several outreach efforts including an interactive construction map, detailed online schedule, regular newsletters, and virtual open house presentations live on the City of Oceanside's YouTube channel, offering residents the opportunity to ask questions.
