Melanie Laurent’s 'Le Bal des Folles,' a series sequel to Cedric Klapisch’s 'L'Auberge Espagnol' film trilogy, and French Open tennis are among the highlights unveiled Monday.

Amazon Prime is boosting its line-up of French originals on Monday, unveiling several new French original films and series as well as live sports, including the French Open tennis tournament, as part of its new slate.

The Amazon French originals include Le Bal des Folles, a period mystery thriller directed by, and starring Mélanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds), Salade Grecque (Greek Salad), a series sequel to Cédric Klapisch’s hit culture clash comedy trilogy L'Auberge Espagnol, and French adaptations of popular unscripted formats including LOL and Celebrity Hunted.

The programs were presented during a virtual press conference on Monday hosted by Georgia Brown, director of European Originals; Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios; Thomas Dubois, Amazon Studios’ head of Originals for France; Isabelle Bertrand, head of content for Amazon Prime Video France; and Alex Green, managing director of sport at Amazon Prime Video.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter after the presser, Dubois said when it came to its French slate, Amazon was looking to quality over quantity.

"We're definitely not in the volume game. In 2021 we will have almost 10 original French productions on the service for our customers and this is the sort of number we plan to stick to in the years to come. Of course if we have a wonderful pitch for a show we can't afford to miss, the numbers will go up, but we don't want to compromise the quality of our shows."

Dubois noted that while Amazon's French originals will be carried on the service worldwide, the primary audience for the new shows is local.

"The main focus [in doing French originals] is to try acquisitions to the [French] service, our original productions in France are made for the local consumers," he said. "But, looking at the ambition and the production value of our series and our movies, I am really sure that they can have an impact outside of our territory."

Laurent directs and stars in Le Bal des Folles, Amazon's first original French feature. The film is set in 19th century Paris and follows a woman falsely institutionalized at a time when rebellious women were frequently labeled as insane. Lou de Laâge, Emmanuelle Bercot, and Benjamin Voisin co-star. Alain Goldman is producing through his Legende Films. The film bows on Amazon worldwide later this year.

Salade Grecque, a contemporary dramedy, will see Klapisch revisit the characters from his hit L'Auberge Espagnol film trilogy. Twenty years after the events of the films, Tom and Mia, the children of L'Auberge Espagnol characters Wendy and Xavier (played in the films by Kelly Reilly and Romain Duris, set off to Greece for more culture clash adventures. Bruno Lévy will co-produce the series, which will go out on Amazon worldwide in 2020.

Flashback, Amazon's second original French feature film, is a time-traveling comedy about the history of women's rights from French comedian Caroline Vigneaux. The film will star Vigneaux alongside Sophia Aram, Suzanne Clément, Lison Daniel, Issa Doumbia, Gad Elmaleh, Lannick Gautry, Emy Ltr, Florent Peyre and Sylvie Testud. Alain Goldman of Légende Films is producing.

Other French series in the Amazon pipeline include the comedy Miskina, from French actor and comedian Melha Bedia (Forte), which revolves around a 30-year-old French Muslim woman who is single, in love with her best friend, and living with her grandmother. Margaux Marciano and Nicolas Duval Adassovsky are producing the eight-episode series through their Quad shingle for Amazon, which will air the series worldwide next year.

Amazon France's 1960s-set spy series Totems, from Gaumont, announced its cast, which will include Niels Arestrup, Lambert Wilson, Jose Garcia, and Ana Girardot. The show follows a French scientist who works for the CIA but falls in love with a KGB agent.

Amazon also unveiled three local adaptations of popular unscripted formats: LOL hosted by Philippe Lacheau, Celebrity Hunted with stars including Frank Gastambide and Ramzy Bedia, and True Story which will feature such actors as Isabelle Adjani, Adele Earchopoulos, and Pierre Niney.

On the sports side, Amazon Prime Video France announced it has secured rights in France to the French Open tennis tournament, marking the first live sports Amazon has purchased for the territory. The multi-year deal for the French Open kicks off with this year's tournament on May 17.
