After years of anticipation, Zack Snyder's Justice League finally restored the director's original vision for the DCEU team-up movie, but the MCU already beat it to the punch on various elements it introduced. The Justice League Snyder Cut culminates in the battle of the Justice League against Steppenwolf and Darkseid in the DCEU, likely leaving the heroes' epic quest to free the Man of Steel from the Anti-Life Equation up to the viewer's imagination. Although not a conclusive ending, the movie does provide the DCEU with some closure.
Zack Snyder's 5-movie plan never intended to expand the DCEU with the sort of seemingly endless narrative that the MCU is known for. However, the Snyder Cut did add many new important elements that the theatrical cut of Justice League didn't include, such as Martian Manhunter, Darkseid, and the apocalyptic Knightmare future where Batman teams up with the Joker and Deathstroke. Justice League 2 and Justice League 3 would have expanded the story to new horizons with Green Lantern and Superman's son, Bruce Kent, having big roles. Still, the Justice League trilogy was always going to be a more compact story than the MCU's (thus far) 23-movie Infinity Saga.
Justice League: The Snyder Cut’s Biggest Differences From 2017
Some of the changes that Zack Snyder included in the Justice League Snyder Cut are original ideas within the DCEU, but they aren't quite as innovative in the contemporary superhero movie landscape. The extensive cinematic universe Marvel Studios has created and its immersion into Disney+'s TV format has allowed the MCU to incorporate many ideas that the DCEU only started exploring in the Snyder Cut. While this doesn't make the Justice League Snyder Cut any less original, it still helps Marvel keep an advantage over DC when it comes to long-form narratives.
The Skrulls Impersonated Humans Before Martian Manhunter
One of the heroes who benefitted the most out of the release of the Justice League Snyder Cut is Martian Manhunter. Zack Snyder originally intended to reveal that General Swanwick, portrayed by Henry Lennix since Man of Steel, was the hero J'onn J'onzz all along. This was supposed to happen in a future Justice League sequel rather than in the DCEU's first team-up movie, but considering the limited possibilities of a sequel, the director chose to introduce the Justice League member in a dramatic scene where Martian Manhunter shapeshifted from Martha Kent back to his natural form. The MCU introduced the Skrulls, shapeshifting green aliens who also side with the heroes, in 2019's Captain Marvel. Like Martian Manhunter, Skrulls like Talos prefer to remain in obscurity, impersonating important characters like Nick Fury and government officials to help humankind in secret.
Thanos Wiped Out The Universe Before Darkseid
Zack Snyder wanted to introduce Darkseid in Justice League from the very beginning. However, the theatrical cut of Justice League focused on Steppenwolf and portrayed him as the ambitious Apokoliptian who led the first invasion on Earth, where he fought the Atlantians, the Amazons, and the Olympian Gods. The Snyder Cut gave Darkseid that role, as originally intended, since he is the villain who wants to have the universe under his rule. On the other hand, Thanos first appeared in the MCU as early as 2012's The Avengers, and it was only in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War that he successfully carried out his plan to eliminate half of all life in the universe.
With Thanos triumphant and the Avengers divided, 2019's Avengers: Endgame had all of the Earth's Mightiest Heroes assemble and face the Mad Titan once again to bring back those he snapped out of existence, even though that meant some of Earth's greatest protectors, like Iron Man and Black Widow, needed to sacrifice themselves to fix it. According to Zack Snyder's plan for the DCEU, Darkseid would have achieved his goal of bringing the universe to its knees, killing powerful heroes such as Batman, Aquaman, and Wonder Woman along the way. Darkseid never had the chance to really shine as the DCEU's big bad, but his promise to attack Earth "the old way" resembles Thanos' promise to "do it himself."
The Avengers Used Time Travel To Save The World Before The Flash
As a direct consequence of Thanos' victory, the Avengers regrouped and used time travel to borrow all six Infinity Stones from different timelines. Thanks to the collective efforts of the MCU's greatest minds and Scott Land using Hank Pym's technology, the Avengers succeeded in defeating Thanos for good. In the Justice League Snyder Cut, The Flash managed to run back through time for the very first time, but only to revert the death of Cyborg and Superman just a few moments before.
This scene set up The Flash's future trip through time to warn Bruce Wayne about the death of Lois Lane and Superman's evil transformation, as seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Apparently, Barry Allen would have to build the Cosmic Treadmill after the events of Justice League to achieve it, but time travel would be the key to saving the universe. The Flash's brief use of time travel in the Snyder Cut also resembles Thanos' Time Stone trick in Avengers: Infinity War, which he used to resurrect Vision and take the Mind Stone from his forehead just seconds after Vision had already died.
Vision Turned Evil Before Superman
Both Vision and Superman are the epitomai of idealistic heroes who are usually the least likely to become evil in their respective universes. Yet, both of them turned evil under the influence of an outside force. In WandaVision, it's revealed that Vision's body has been disassembled by S.W.O.R.D. and then put back together as a sentient but emotionless weapon that can be easily controlled. In the Justice League Snyder Cut, the Knightmare future reveals that Superman has succumbed to Darkseid's Anti-Life Equation after Lois Lane died, which makes him Darkseid's loyal pawn. Vision's lack of a real consciousness is reflected in his completely white look, while Superman's resurrection is symbolized by his iconic black Superman suit, which teases his turn towards evil when he uses the same heat vision he uses against the last survivors in Batman's Knightmare epilogue. On a less bleak note, Steve Rogers also wore a dark version of his iconic blue-and-red suit in Avengers: Infinity War when he came back from the shadows in his "Nomad" guise, something that could be described as a "resurrection" of the Captain America icon.
WandaVision Used A Unique Aspect Ratio Before Zack Snyder's Justice League
WandaVision's technical details contributed to its innovative narrative, as each sitcom era that Wanda Maximoff used as background for her fake reality adapted to the technical aspects of popular real-life shows. For instance, the episode that took place in the 1950s had a 4:3 aspect ratio and was shot in front of a live audience while the episode that took place in the late aughts used a more modern look with different editing. The 1.37:1 aspect ratio of Zack Snyder's Justice League breaks off from the conventional widescreen look of conventional action flicks. Along with the dark color palette and the 4-hour runtime, this aspect ratio is part of the specific aesthetics of Zack Snyder's passion project - one that isn't focused on setting up more installments in an ongoing series of MCU-like movies.
