Apple has officially discontinued the original HomePod wireless speaker.

Speaking to TechCrunch, Apple confirmed that the HomePod will continue to be available "while supplies last" online and in-store at Apple retailers. Apple will continue to provide HomePod users with software updates, service, and support. Instead, Apple will be focusing on the HomePod mini going forward.

"HomePod mini has been a hit since its debut last fall, offering customers amazing sound, an intelligent assistant, and smart home control all for just $99," Apple said in a statement.

Currently, only the white HomePod model remains available via Apple's online store. The space gray version may continue to be found in some retail locations.

PCMag reviewed the original HomePod speaker, praising its "powerful audio performance with rich, full bass" and its "visually pleasing design." Unfortunately, it came saddled with several shortcomings as well: no aux input, Bluetooth streaming options, or voice control for non-Apple music services.

The HomePod also debuted at $349, which put it at the higher end of home speaker pricing. A later price drop to $299 helped a bit, but when the smaller, cheaper HomePod mini debuted in 2020 for just $99, it proved itself a worthy replacement. While it still didn't offer an aux input, it did deliver with solid audio, good Apple Home app integration, and great voice control options.

It's unclear how long the original HomePod will remain available. For those interested, it's better to buy one sooner rather than later.
