Cult comedy Rick & Morty has always played fast and loose with canon, but reintroducing season 1’s original Beth and Jerry in the upcoming season 5 could be a clever, funny twist for the show. Debuting in 2013, Rick & Morty rapidly grew from a cult hit into a legitimate pop culture phenomenon thanks to the show’s goofy sense of humor, breakneck pace, and clever parodies of sci-fi tropes and sitcom conventions.
Over its 4 seasons, Rick & Morty has repeatedly thrown continuity and canon to the wind in favor of madcap surrealism, but the series occasionally benefits from throwing in references to earlier outings for a moment of rare sincerity or (more often) a long-delayed punchline. Never afraid of an obscure reference, Rick & Morty has been known to unexpectedly bring back fan-favorite characters and use them to comment on both TV conventions and fan culture, which is why the series should revisit a pair of pivotal season 1 figures in the forthcoming season 5.
Now that the intervening seasons of Rick & Morty have spent so long focusing on how unhealthy and dysfunctional Jerry and Beth’s relationship can be, it would be an unexpectedly poignant move for the series to revisit the world they Cronenberged way back in early season 1. Using inter-dimensional travel, Rick and Morty season 5 could revisit the doomed reality of Rick & Morty’s dark early outing “Rick Potion No.9” and allow viewers to see that not only are Beth and Jerry alive there having not been turned into monsters, but they are also in arguably the healthiest relationship the pair have ever been shown in (if the events of Rick and Morty #45 are to be believed, anyway).
Though it's already been shown prior that Rick & Morty’s most seemingly mismatched couple can take care of one another when things go bad, this could emphasize the point in a way that has a more long-lasting impact. With Space Beth having already shown more than one of the same character can co-exist in the world of Rick & Morty (and the constant red herrings surrounding Evil Morty's importance proving that fans want to see more of these alternate character versions), it could even be worth bringing the functional, healthy version of Beth and Jerry into the show’s main universe. This could show the “regular” Beth and Jerry how good their relationship could be, if they focused on supporting each other instead of constantly sniping and undermining - even if the original pair were only introduced to annoy their duplicates in the current universe.
Moreover, the return of season 1’s versions of Beth and Jerry would show that Jerry isn’t always useless, something that the character could do with now that his constant status as a source of embarrassment is wearing thin. Rick & Morty’s Jerry is at his best when the show is twisting the depiction of him as a sad-sack loser, as seen in season 4’s “Childrick of Mort,” and the return of his hyper-confident, competent iteration could reinvigorate an otherwise tired character as Rick & Morty’s season 5 is set to do with many series regulars.
