Ann Arbor’s Pure Roots dispensary expanding with several new locations - MLive.com

ANN ARBOR, MI -- An Ann Arbor dispensary is set to expand its footprint and open a cultivation and retail facility in Lansing.

Pure Roots, which opened in mid-2020, will open its Lansing location in September and has plans to open additional locations in Centerline and Battle Creek.

The cultivation portion of the Lansing location is currently operating and is set to harvest in August, according to Reni George, Pure Root’s vice president of governmental affairs.

The dispensary specializes in non-remediated cannabis and terpene profiling. Although most cannabis goes through a cleansing process to remove traces of mold and mildew after testing, cleansing agents used in remediated cannabis can affect the way it burns, George said.

“(Remediated cannabis) gives a different user experience, including burning in the back of the throat,” he said.

Pure Roots also tests for and profiles different terpenes — the aromatic agent of the cannabis flower — in order to categorize its product into four “feels:” Revive, Reflect, Relief and Rest.

“It’s not just flavor that terpenes give you, some have a pharmacological effect,” said Derrick Walker, a Pure Roots employee.

Launching Pure Roots in the middle of a pandemic was difficult, George said.

“Customers want to see and smell cannabis before they buy,” he said.

The Ann Arbor shop opened to medicinal patients in April 2020 and to recreational consumers and in-person customers in June 2020. Since then, it has seen a 20-percent growth per month in customers and sees between 12,000 and 13,000 customers per week, George said.

Expansion has always been the plan for Pure Roots, which currently has licenses for 14 dispensaries across Michigan.

In addition to offering only non-remediated cannabis, Pure Roots also helps customers choose the right product for them through surveys and budtender-guided selection.

“It’s really about dosing and meeting the customer’s needs specifically,” George said.

Madison Rench, who recently won a giveaway through Pure Roots, said she would go back to the dispensary, even though she grows her own cannabis. She said she enjoyed the process of choosing her strain.

“I hate to put cannabis into categories, but for consumers, I think categories are a great way to give them a bunch of information at once,” Rench said.

Pure Roots currently carries cannabis from more than 60 vendors and offers edibles, pre-rolls, flower, CBD products and more. Find the full listing at the website here.
