INXS comes alive in new ‘Original Sin – The 7 Sins’ dance film - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- INXS has been inactive for nearly a decade now.

But there have been plenty of, well, new sensations during that time to keep the hit-making Australian band visible, and even vital.

The projects include a TV documentary and miniseries, a documentary about the late frontman Michael Hutchence (“Mystify”), and the re-release of the concert film, “INXS: Live Baby Live.” A stage musical is in the works, while chief songwriter Andrew Farriss has launched a solo career.

Joining that docket this week is “Original Sin-- The 7 Sins,” a short dance film premiering Friday, July 16, via Veeps, the streaming service founded by Good Charlotte brothers Joel and Benji Madden. Conceived as a live show by INXS’ late former manager Chris “CM” Murphy and directed by Amy Tinkham, the half-hour production takes actress/dancer Autumn Miller expressionistically through each of the sins, occasionally joined by fellow dancer Trevor Jackson.

The soundtrack, meanwhile, is a set of reimagined INXS favorites, some created especially for the piece, others hailing from the band-helmed 2010 covers set “Original Sin.”

“This has been a labor of love in every way one calls something a labor of love,” Tinkham, who met Murphy three years ago, said during a Zoom discussion about the project. “(Murphy) had a twinkle in his eye and an anything’s possible kind of vibe that was right up my alley and basically presented me with the epic task of ‘What do you want to do with the INXS catalog?’

“I was a fan of INXS when I was a dancer, so it just became this wonderful challenge.”

With its artful and often avant-garde choreography as well as its skewed versions of the songs, “Original Sin” is certainly among the more challenging presentations for INXS fans to wrap their eyes, ears and heads around. But the band members were on board from the get-go, according to co-founder Kirk Pengilly.

“I’m just blown away with the whole project,” the saxophonist and guitarist said from his home in Australia. “Going way back to the early years of INXS...we always explored the marriage of our music with visuals. Right back to the first single we ever released back in 1980 we were making videos and things like that. They go so well together, so it’s something we always loved to explore.”

During its 35 active years, INXS sold more than 75 million albums worldwide and had 16 Billboard Hot 100 hits. The sextet was inducted into its homeland’s ARIA Hall of fame in 2001 but had never fully recovered from Hutchence’s death -- ruled a suicide but also suspected to have been accidental -- in 1997. The group soldiered on with three subsequent lead singers, one (J.D. Fortune) chosen via the TV reality show “Rock Star: INXS,” before going into dry-dock in 2012.

Tinkham says “Original Sin” was well on its way to the stage when the pandemic lockdown began during March of 2020. But Murphy -- who died from cancer in January at the age of 66 -- “was level enough to say, ‘OK, what do you want to do now with it?’” according to Tinkham, which led to the truncated virtual presentation.

“Adversity has this beautiful way of making you, as an artist, lean truly into your art, lean truly into your family -- and this whole experience was a family experience,” she explains. “You end up with something even more meaningful...because we have done something I think is really special and it’s also in a way my thank-you and my love letter to Chris Murphy and to INXS in almost every way for having music that can get us through almost everything -- hard things and beautiful things.”

As pandemic restrictions lift, Tinkham plans to bring a full-length “Original Sin” to the stage as originally planned. Pengilly says the surviving INXS members are looking to seeing that as well.

“I think (Hutchence) would’ve loved this; He was always pushing for us to go in different directions and explore new sort of sounds and...landscapes with our music,” he notes. “When I watched the film for the first time, it just drew so many emotions up and there’s not a lot of things that I’ve seen recently that make me feel emotional. So, yeah, it’s just visually stunning and...just so good.”

“Original Sin -- The 7 Sins” premieres at 7 p.m. Friday, July 16. Tickets via veeps.com.
