You could see that Megan Thee Stallion was living out her greatest dreams at the 2021 Grammys. Stepping on stage to accept her third award of the evening, with Beyoncé literally making room for her at the microphone, the 26-year-old rap queen looked, momentarily, at a loss for words.
Tell me you wouldn't act exactly like this if you won an award with Beyoncé.
Megan Thee Stallion had just stopped the entire show with a dance-heavy, Broadway-esque, exceptionally glittery performance of “WAP” with Cardi B that will likely top out the Best Moments From The Grammys lists tomorrow. Earlier in the evening, Megan won her first-ever Grammy for Best Rap Performance. She also won the coveted award for Best New Artist, the first woman rapper to do so in 22 years.
And then she got called up onto the stage to accept her third Grammy, hand-in-hand with Beyoncé. The two women won for Best Rap Song for the "Savage" remix. Famously gracious, Beyoncé led Megan to the stage, and then stepped aside, leaving Megan looking near tears. Together, the two are the first woman artists to ever win Best Rap Performance.
“My mama would always be like ‘Megan, what would Beyoncé do?'" the rapper told the audience, trembling in what looked like a mixture of joy and surprise, as she described growing up idolizing Beyoncé. “And I'm always like, ‘You know what? What would Beyoncé do but make it a little bit ratchet.’" She gestured at Beyoncé in shock, a wordless signal literally billions of people can understand—even a woman sweeping the Grammys feels intimidated by the awesome presence of Bey.
“I just want to quickly give my love to Megan, I have so much respect for you” Beyoncé added. Megan looked like she might faint. Both women gave their love to Houston, their shared hometown.
It's crazy to see a deeply deserving person achieve an accomplishment so major that they probably never even pictured it—winning multiple top awards in her industry, side-by-side with your greatest idol. Grammy host Trevor Noah joined them on the stage to announce that Beyonce has just tied the all-time record for most grammy winners ever by a woman artist—that's 27 Grammys, thank you very much. Just minutes later, she broke that record.
